Run you fatty!

Run Fatboy RunBoy, were those aliens scary, or what? If it weren't for the spoiled gallons of milk in my fridge, who knows how long they would've stayed on Earth!

But enough about April Fools' Day (it was pretty fun this year) and on to Run Fatboy Run. I saw it on Saturday with Jo at ArcLight Hollywood - they had it playing on the huge Cinerama Dome. How about that Cinerama Dome though? That thing is enormous! The screen's curved, but you forget about it almost instantly. They said it was digitally projected, I couldn't notice, though I did notice the digital pixels at an AMC in San Diego where I saw Bee Movie... but that wasn't supposed to be a digital theatre, so who knows.

Anyway, back to Run Fatboy Run. It's no doubt a Brit film, but because it's directed by an American, what the hell kind of comedy is it? Well, that American who directs it is not just any American, he is a total New Yorker. Even though he was raised in Los Angeles and attended school in Chicago, the world knows him only as one person, Ross from Friends. It's David Schwimmer's first film, and when you watch the movie, you'll agree that he did a pretty good job. But he did have a lot of help, Michael Ian Black and Simon Pegg co-write the hilarious script.

British comedies and American comedies are extremely different. If you're a fan of Simon Pegg's previous work, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, you'll probably enjoy this one as well - but be warned that there is hardly any blood in the movie, and no one is torn limb to limb, haha. Those two other Pegg films are also British comedies as well, I hope you knew that. Jo was asking me, before and after the film, what the difference between the two types of comedies, and my response is: the manner in which they deal with certain topics. This film can be classified as a romantic comedy, but it is in no way like the romantic comedies of America. Most American romantic comedies have a romantic structure and backbone with jokes sprinkled in between, whereas Brit romantic comedies have a comedic structure with bits of romance sprinkled in between. The brit films just don't take certain things that seriously. In many parts of this film, you'll find that anytime a serious element is brought up, it is quickly shot down with a joke. Won't tell you when of course, no spoilers here!

A great example of the differences between Brit comedies and American comedies can be seen in the American television shows Seinfeld and Friends. While both are obviously very American, the way they both deal with comedy is very different. Seinfeld makes it a point to not let the dramatic stuff in life take over the comedic elements of the show, that is why no one ever gets married or gets involved in anything that is remotely emotional - in fact, when George gets married, they end up killing off his wife! Jerry too, he has a new girlfriend practically every week. Those folks don't touch emotion, ever! Friends, on the other hand, had no issue with getting emotional (which may be one of the reasons I don't like Friends all too much, the emotional parts of the show just got in the way for me). Ross' character constantly gets married to different women during the series (to an array of women I might add), and the show's last few seasons revolve around his and Rachel's relationship, as well as Chandler and Monica's marriage. Emotion was a backbone in that show, while in Seinfeld, emotion was almost nonexistent. And by the way, while on the topic of Seinfeld, Jerry got in a car accident the other day while driving an old Fiat (he's a car collector). His brakes went out and he made himself crash to avoid an intersection where an even more dangerous accident could have occurred. But he's fine, he was laughing about it in interviews, haha. What a guy.

But the most obvious comparison between Brit comedies and American comedies is easily found in the two versions of The Office. But because I make it a point to not watch the UK version (so as not to ruin the US version for me), I cannot speak about the difference, haha, but I'm sure it is obvious. And speaking of The Office, this coming Thursday, NBC has new episodes! Yippee!

The Brits just have a dryer sense of humor than the Americans. And in terms of emotion, may it be because they don't feel comfortable speaking about it or they just find it funnier to leave it out, it is never a major part in their comedies. But putting all the politics aside, Run Fatboy Run is a hilarious-beyond-hilarious comedy. You probably already know what it's about, but in case you don't, Simon Pegg's character runs away from his wedding leaving his pregnant wife-to-be (Thandie Newton) in the street screaming after him. But Simon's still in love with Thandie. It then follows up five years later with Thandie's character falling for this nice guy, who doubles as a schmuck, Hank Azaria. In order to prove his love, fatty Simon runs in the very same marathon that Hank will be running. There's much more than that log line, so go to a theatre and see it. It's extremely hilarious. And I didn't find it at all predictable, it was just great. And in addition, David Schwimmer was on Conan two weeks ago to talk about the film. It was great! Watch it streamed below, or go to its page to download it here.

Tonight is basketball night for me! Two big national games - the game I'm most looking forward to is obviously the Mavs/Lakers game. Pau Gasol is back, playing his second game, which means the Lakers are back. Andy will be going with them on the road trip this week and will probably make his debut at home against the Spurs next Sunday. By which time we will be No. 1 in the West waiting to play the Warriors in the first round (Mavs will drop out of the Playoffs) and will destroy everyone in our paths to become the 2008 NBA Champions. It's a fact. Only problem tonight is that Time Warner Cable is putting baseball HD on 413, and not basketball HD. So I think I might have to watch the game on ESPN and not settle for SD Joel and Stu. Though it saddens me, I'm putting HD before announcers. Forgive me guys? Ima doesn't care for Stu, in fact, Stu's psychical mind really scares the gonads out of Ima. So he'll be watching ESPN either way. ESPN announcers are cool, half time show isn't too bad either - Stephen A. rocks! If only we could combine the ESPN announcers with the TNT halftime/post game shows (TNT announcers are horrible. Reggie Miller and Kevin Harlan? Are you serious? I'd rather hear George Bush announce basketball than those two annoying idiots. Oh my God, shut up). But KCAL9/FSN beats all of them, only in HD though. So that's that. I'm outta here. It's Heath Ledger and Tony Perkins' birthdays today. Robyn told me it's Stephanie's birthday today too, but she doesn't come here so I won't say spit for her, haha. Take care everyone. see u.
