Wednesday, April 30, 2008 @ 10:50 PM PDT - The West is boring
Pardon the Interruption - Phil JacksonSorry, but yes, the West is boring. Those aren't Phil's word, they're mine. I never thought I'd say it, especially this season, but is the East fun or what? If it weren't for the Lakers, the West would be so unimportant right now. For the first time ever, a 50-win team got the 8th seed, but for the first time ever, a 50-win team got swept in Round 1.

In fact, three of the four series in the West are already done. While I'm happy the Lakers pushed the Nuggets off the edge before they could even react, that series had promised to be real exciting. Offense versus offense, going at it, head-to-head. The first two games were fun (especially the first!), but the last two were just sad (for the Nuggets, I mean – what a bunch of quitters). And how about the other series, Mavs and Hornets. Jason Kidd versus Chris Paul; old versus new. The only thing that series did was show how old and dumb the Mavs are and make a guy, or soon to be two, lose their jobs. And Suns and Spurs? That was another series that showed a lot of promise. The NBA champions versus the team that traded for Shaq to beat those NBA champions - how awesome was it that they met in the first round! The only thing exciting about that series was the first game, and also watching the Suns plummet into oblivion too. That was quite enjoyable, because everyone knows how much LA hates the Suns – but I personally wanted to finish them off, I wanted the Lakers to be the team to make Mike think about resigning, not the stupid Spurs. Rockets and Jazz? That's the only series still going on in the West, but that matchup is getting old. I'm only semi-interested in it because the winner will play the Lakers.

Wednesday, April 23, 2008 @ 7:15 PM PDT - Kal Penn visits Conan
Late Night with Conan O'Brien - Kal PennI'm going to try to make this as quick as I can because the game is about to start in a few minutes. I will start by rejoicing, the Curse is finally broken! Ima and I are now 1-3 when we go with each other to Laker games, though still 0-3 when we sit next to each other. Imadul and I didn't sit next to each other on Sunday. Not to rid of the Curse or anything, just because the awesome tickets we got were so cheap because the seats were not side by side, they were in different rows but nearby. So the question begs to be asked whether that is what caused us to lose all those games. We will not know for quite some time because I am personally too poor to afford anymore Laker games. I'm not going to even wait until next season, I will force myself to wait until next year - unless of course Robyn decides to invite me to another Lakers/Clippers game, though I doubt it as I probably embarrassed her season ticket holding family. Ah well.

The game was really great. I have to sadly admit that I felt it wasn't as great as the Warrior game from last month, because that was just spectacular. Though, in this one we had beyond awesome seats, just five rows from the court. We sat a few rows behind Spider-Man and Jim Belushi. David Arquette was not too far either, though, unfortunately, her wife was nowhere to be found. And to add to all the celebrities, Rick Fox was standing near us for practically the entire pre-game. The atmosphere was great, every single person was into the game, everyone was vocal. That's Playoff atmosphere for you, MVP and DUI chants, and helping me tell Melo that he sucks. You'd think that was the best part, but the best part of it all was how many times we got on TV. Ima and I got on TV so many times, I lost count after I watched the tape. I've been on TV once before, at a Clipper game, but that was the back of my head, this time it was the front! And it was seen all over the nation! Ima had the best TV coverage though. He stuck out like a sore thumb at one point. It was great. I know you guys are dying to see what we looked like on TV, so I decided I'd capture it and show you guys!

Saturday, April 19, 2008 @ 10:30 PM PDT - Will the Curse be broken?!
Carmelo Anthony in LA on January 21, 2008Yes, you guessed correctly, that photo is of Denver Nuggets Forward Carmelo Anthony passed out drunk on the Staples Center floor. The kid's got a lot to learn – you might be able to get away with these kinds of shenanigans in good ol' Syracuse, but not here in sunny Los Angeles!

So after a week of teams with seedings that were too close to call, all teams are now matched up and eight of them played today. Though this year's Playoffs will be very exciting, no one in LA cares about any other series more than the one that will start tomorrow at noon, a game that Imadul somehow got tickets to – that's two games straight, Ima! It'll be just like last year when you went to Kings and Nuggets back-to-back April 1 and April 3! The Lakers are of course the Number 1 seed. The Nuggets squeezed into the 8th seed after a meltdown by the Warriors (and their win over the Warriors didn't hurt the Nuggets either). Will there be another 8 vs 1 upset? Hell no. Ima found seats that are closer and cheaper than the Warrior game we went to last month, and this is a Playoff game. So how we got it for so cheap, I have no idea. But we're going, Insha Allah, so I'm not complaining. He's still in Santa Barbara right now, and it's a 12 o'clock tip-off, so let's see if he makes it on time, haha.

But it may not be the most brilliant plan for us two to go to this game, the first game of the series, and of the Playoffs, for this awesome Laker team. You see, Imadul and I are cursed. We are cursed with the Curse. What is the Curse? Let me explain, but let me warn you, if the story of the Curse causes you to vomit out of your ears, don't blame me, I'm warning you now. Over the last two seasons, Imadul and I have gone to a combined total of six games. Of those six games, we went to three of them together: Nuggets (4.3.07), Magic (12.2.07), and Warriors (3.23.08). In all of those three games, the Lakers were the losing team. But, the three that we went to separately: Kings (4.1.07), Clippers (2.23.08), and Kings (4.15.08), the Lakers man-handled the other team, averaging over 21 point victories in each game. And that, my friends, is the Curse: we are 0-3 at Laker games together, but alone, we are 3-0. ESPN and ABC have both been giving out stats all day about the percentage the winning team has of winning the series, and although the numbers kept changing every time they put them up, it's a pretty high number. So let's hope the Curse breaks tomorrow.

Monday, April 14, 2008 @ 11:45 PM PDT - The Kobester on PTI
Pardon the Interruption - Kobe BryantWhen you think about it, this No. 1 spot kind of fell onto our laps. If you go back two weeks, the Lakers lost to two of the worst teams in the NBA at home, back-to-back. After that disgusting display, the idea of the Lakers finishing with the No. 1 spot in the West was somewhat unthinkable, even with the great things they overcame this season. We were neck-and-neck with New Orleans, with two extremely simple games to play at home, but we blew it. It was that simple. And even though we haven't lost more than a game since – 7-1, only losing last Tuesday in Portland, a game that could have vaulted us to first with a win – our chances of finishing first through this weekend were somewhat slim considering the easy schedule New Orleans had lined up and the difficult one we had. But what do you know, we embarrassed the Hornets so bad while they were in LA that they went up to Sacramento and lost! Not only that, we just straight-up destroyed the Spurs! So even though we played really hard this weekend, we're lucky we got through it.

But let's not look passed tomorrow night's game, the final game of the regular season (and the final game we'll be hearing Stu and Joel, don't forget!). Sacramento. I just said that they beat New Orleans. Tonight, they were really close to beating San Antonio as well, so they're really hungry for a win – and of those 3 teams, which team do you think they will want to defeat most? That's right, us. Imadul will be there to witness it first-hand, lucky bastard. I'm glad I'm not going with him though because every game we've been to together (Nuggets, Magic, Warriors – and what a bummer about them getting kicked out, eh?), we've lost. But when we go without each other (Kings, Clippers) we win. With a win, the Lakers will finish off the season 57-25, and be the best in the West, home-court throughout the Western Conference Playoffs. But they'll have to win first, and it might be difficult. Though it's a job that the Lakers and the league's MVP are willing to take on!

Wednesday, April 9, 2008 @ 9:05 PM PDT - New Internet tomorrow!
Time Warner Cable Business ClassIf you, like me, have been getting really fed up by the speed of this server, those of you who actually sit there and read this stuff, then boy do I have some news for you! This will probably excite me way more than it does you, but hear me out.

It started out in 1994, I was five. My dad's friend took him to Fry's and they bought our first computer. Boy did it suck. I think it was a Packard Bell, had absolutely nothing on it but a word processor. I wrote a story on it, "Eat cheese and barf", similar title to the Goosebumps book, "Say cheese and die", boy was I talented, and in love with Goosebumps - who wasn't? And Internet? What the hell was that? We didn't know it existed! We lived with this computer for two quick years (everything was quick when we were young) and got another Packard Bell from Costco in 1996. It sucked too, but not as much. The only good thing about this second computer was that it came bundled with a disc that said AOL on it. "AOL? America Online?" I thought. "Sounds like some cult to me." Like hell I thought that, I was seven. We loaded it up and we had Internet. Boy was 56k fast, to me I mean.

The next few years are a little fuzzy, but at some point we ditched the Packard Bell and went with a Hewlett-Packard - I thought they were the same company due to the "Packard", go figure. We had AOL on this machine for a few months until a visited my cousin up in Fremont. He had this red thick wire coming out of the wall, looked so cool, they called it DSL. "What is this DSL magic?" I thought. A few weeks later, we called our cable company up and we got ourselves this "DSL", except it wasn't "DSL", it was "Cable Modem" from Time Warner Cable (or cable company). Wow, was it fast. I couldn't believe it. That sluggish Hewlett-Packard became a rocket overnight! Boy were we a happy family.

Friday, April 4, 2008 @ 5:05 PM PDT - Run you fatty!
Run Fatboy RunBoy, were those aliens scary, or what? If it weren't for the spoiled gallons of milk in my fridge, who knows how long they would've stayed on Earth!

But enough about April Fools' Day (it was pretty fun this year) and on to Run Fatboy Run. I saw it on Saturday with Jo at ArcLight Hollywood - they had it playing on the huge Cinerama Dome. How about that Cinerama Dome though? That thing is enormous! The screen's curved, but you forget about it almost instantly. They said it was digitally projected, I couldn't notice, though I did notice the digital pixels at an AMC in San Diego where I saw Bee Movie... but that wasn't supposed to be a digital theatre, so who knows.

Anyway, back to Run Fatboy Run. It's no doubt a Brit film, but because it's directed by an American, what the hell kind of comedy is it? Well, that American who directs it is not just any American, he is a total New Yorker. Even though he was raised in Los Angeles and attended school in Chicago, the world knows him only as one person, Ross from Friends. It's David Schwimmer's first film, and when you watch the movie, you'll agree that he did a pretty good job. But he did have a lot of help, Michael Ian Black and Simon Pegg co-write the hilarious script.

British comedies and American comedies are extremely different. If you're a fan of Simon Pegg's previous work, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, you'll probably enjoy this one as well - but be warned that there is hardly any blood in the movie, and no one is torn limb to limb, haha. Those two other Pegg films are also British comedies as well, I hope you knew that. Jo was asking me, before and after the film, what the difference between the two types of comedies, and my response is: the manner in which they deal with certain topics. This film can be classified as a romantic comedy, but it is in no way like the romantic comedies of America. Most American romantic comedies have a romantic structure and backbone with jokes sprinkled in between, whereas Brit romantic comedies have a comedic structure with bits of romance sprinkled in between. The brit films just don't take certain things that seriously. In many parts of this film, you'll find that anytime a serious element is brought up, it is quickly shot down with a joke. Won't tell you when of course, no spoilers here!
