Drew Brees' finger says it all,
Saints won! One! (Or is he about to hit it into the outfield?) It's Tuesday so perhaps the shock of Sunday night's game has worn off, but I'm still excited about it. It was a great game. Going into it I was thinking,
Seahawks, well, they
were at the Super Bowl two years ago, they lost to the
Steelers last week (the winners of Super Bowl XL), and the
Cardinals a few weeks ago as well, but they're 3 - 2, and they have
Shaun Alexander, but he's been sucking major lately, so the Saints could definitely win this. But the game's away, and the Saints couldn't beat the
Titans nor the
Panthers at home, so how could they beat the Seahawks away? Earlier in the day, all the
ESPN NFL chaps said that the Seahawks were going to win it, even the cool
Boomer who always says, "so you're ALL going with the - " and then goes with the opposite team, didn't go with the Saints. That really made me angry that they didn't have faith in the Saints, looking at them like they're a winless team. I know, they were a winless team at the time, but you have to admit they're not a bad team like the other winless or one-win teams. You got the
Dolphins and the
Rams who are in way too much trouble, oh so much trouble; and the
Jets, the
Bengals, and the
Falcons who are also in a mess of trouble even with one win. And the
Bears suck too and they have two wins! The Saints are not supposed to be in the same category as those guys at all. Even with
Deuce out they had
120 rushing yards on Sunday...
Bush had almost
100 of those! (Which is saying something because he's only had
one of those games before, and if he didn't
lose the ball in the third quarter, he would've definitely surpassed 100 Sunday night as well.) Last week, they had almost
100 rushing yards, that was without Deuce as well, but they lost the game by a field goal. Three weeks before that when Deuce played a full game (against the
Bucs, before their Bye), the team as a whole had
100 yards rushing, Deuce had half of those yards... and now they're getting 120 without him? In no way am I saying that they've replaced Deuce, they can't, but they've certainly figured out how to win without him. And they quickly learned from their mistakes from last week's game and took it to the Seahawks this week, a place where the odds of going in as an away team and winning are very low, something like only five Seahawk losses at home in the last two and a half regular seasons (in their Super Bowl year they were
8 - 0 at home...), until Sunday of course, when it became six losses at home. A loss for the Seahawks that was quickly started by my man rookie
Pierre Thomas of the Saints, who scored on a horrible punt fumble in Seattle's first drive. And because of last night's
Giants win against the Falcons, the Saints are third in the
NFC South. Yippee! Next week Carolina has their Bye and the Bucs play the Lions who are coming out of their Bye after being demolished by the Redskins. We play the Falcons next week, the horrible-defense Falcons that allowed almost
200 yard rushing and 300 yard throwing against the Giants!
Harrington was sacked 4 times, in part due to two first-years on the offensive line... we had five sacks Sunday night against a good offensive line, just pointing it out. In Week 8, the Panthers come out of their Bye to play the
Colts, haha - go ahead mark that as an "L" already - and the Bucs play the
Jaguars who are also a pretty good AFC South team (Colts play Jags Monday Night next week by the way - isn't it fun how all the schedules interconnect?), the Falcons are in their Bye; and we have the
49ers, whose only wins are from Weeks 1 and 2 against the Cardinals and Rams (which was a 1 point win) - their losses were from the Steelers, Seahawks,
Ravens, and soon to be Giants after Week 7, haha. So coming out of Week 8, I got the Panthers at 4 - 3, the Bucs at 4 - 4, the Saints at 3 - 4, and the Falcons at 1 - 6, which means everyone in the NFC South has lost but the Saints - but remember I'm biased, haha. Then in Week 9 the Saints play the Jags... so I won't comment on what'll happen there, haha. What I'm basically trying to say is that the Saints are not going to be last (or third) in their division for very long, especially since their biggest threat is a team with
a quarterback who is just a few years away from being eligible for
Social Security. The Panthers have a tough schedule... but the Bucs don't... so we'll see. Isn't football fun?
This weekend's Saints victory isn't the only exciting news of the week, but this next bit I'm going to touch on is more real tragic than exciting. Most of you have moved away from this beautiful
Los Angeles city so you probably don't know about it, but Friday night on the I-5 and 14 interchange, there was a
15+ car pile-up, mostly big rigs, that caught fire and trapped a dozen people in the truck route tunnel, leading to cracks in the 5 freeway's concrete which is directly above the tunnel. In case you may not know, the I-5 is a major, major freeway on the West Coast, connecting nearly every city, major or minor, from Mexico to Canada. Due to its length, it's the freeway that nearly every transportation vehicle, big rigs, chooses to transport its goods through. And besides that, the I-5/14 interchange is a major section connecting
Palmdale/
Lancaster,
Santa Clarita, and Los Angeles. There are so many people that work in LA but commute every morning and night from Palmdale and Lancaster due to the low housing costs in those cities, and there are even more people traveling to Santa Clarita everyday to visit the best theme park in California,
Magic Mountain. Well, due to this monstrous collision Friday night, the I-5 was closed all of Saturday and Sunday, causing huge delays for everyone, not so much for the Southerners of LA who don't need to venture north that much. There were delays ranging up to two or three hours to travel four miles because all lanes of the 5 turned into one as they exited and maneuvered through the surface streets of Santa Clarita and The Old Road to get past the fire and back onto the 5. It was
Eid morning that Saturday when many people were starting to get stuck on the 5 when my family from Bakersfield came down to visit us. They left at about 10 AM and reached us at about 4 PM, a usually two hour drive turned into six hours. In no way am I finding humor in the three people who were found dead nor at the many gone missing, but it was rather fun to watch so many people stuck in traffic - my parents and I ventured out to see what it was like with this major part of the freeways shutdown. It was a wreck, and we didn't even touch the 5, we were driving up Balboa and
Sepulveda and
The Old Road and we couldn't get anywhere - just think of how bad it was for those people who were actually trying to get somewhere. There were a few photographers out there also enjoying the huge shutdown, it was quite a site, honestly. I took a few shots, but I didn't have my camera with me so I resorted to ugly camera phone shots while driving. But anyway, back to the freeway.
Caltrans was saying that it could take up to a few days to figure out when the 5 would actually be open - a few days until they knew when it would be open?! It was Saturday and come Monday there would be trucks upon trucks coming south or going north do deliver products to people and the 5 would be closed? Caltrans said that nearly 3 cars per second travel the 5 on average (well they gave a different number, my Dad and I calculated it down to 3 cars per second... that's so many, damn!), and with the 5 being closed, those 3 cars per second could not be driving their 70 mph through the 5, they'd be stuck driving 2 mph on the streets. Detours were 50 - 75 miles out of the way, that's how important this part of the 5 is! But somehow, somehow, Caltrans
opened the I-5 early yesterday morning. Now that's amazing, isn't it? They were projecting a week until they found out how long it would be until they opened it, and they fixed the problem in less than a weekend! The bodies are still unaccounted for, but before the big weekday rush would kick in and drive everyone crazy, the government fixed it. That's quite amazing, I think. And just when I thought the government sucked... haha.
The last bit of news is kind of strange. Now, I like to keep up on my news, I usually file through
Engadget (which has been sucking hard recently) and other
Weblogs Inc. sites, the
IMDb News, the
New York Times (I get twice a week through school), and
Google News. In Google News I first hit up
Sci/Tech, then
Sports, and then
Entertainment. In Entertainment, any word of "Paris" or "Britney" or "rehab" is quickly scrolled up, and I look for news on any new movies or ratings or tragic deaths and what-not (haha, wording this is pretty amusing). Well over the weekend, Friday I think, but I guess that isn't a weekend as it was Friday morning; I was looking over those pages when I came across a title that hit me right away. If you don't know, I'm a big
Simon Pegg fan, even since
Shaun of the Dead, I fell in love; so the title was something like "
Simon Pegg to play Scotty in 'Star Trek'". "
Star Trek?" I thought. "I don't care about Star Trek!" I thought again. "But Simon Pegg!" I thought, "this I care about!" I thought again. So I clicked
the article absentmindedly thinking that he was cast in some new stupid Star Trek movie. And I read it; turns out that idiot
J.J. Abrams, who made some
Lost episodes and
Mission: Impossible III with that
Scientologist chap, is doing a new movie about Star Trek, that he'll probably blockbuster up like his other stuff. But that's only what I got in the first part of the sentence, it's the rest of that sentence that really got me all frantic, here's the sentence, "
The new "Star Trek" adventure will be directed by J.J. Abrams and star Eric Bana, Anton Yelchin, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Leonard Nimoy." Read that again, I needed a second read myself. Who's the third person listed, listed right after
Eric Bana who the girls go crazy for? "Is that our buddy
Anton?" I thought. And sure enough it wasn't just me having fantasies about him - he was really written there. Anton, the mastermind behind
15 Minutes,
Along Came a Spider,
Gepetto, and
ER, which wasn't even his good stuff! Okay, I'll stop teasing. But anyway, Anton's going to play this Russian Starfleet officer named
Pavel Chekov, born in 2245 - how is Anton going to pull that off?! - and it's supposed to come out next
Christmas day. Oh, and it's budget is supposed to be about
a hundred million bucks, more than any other Star Trek project to date. Sounds like fun to me! Alright everyone, I'm heading out of here. I wrote about the three things I wanted to. Until next time, take care. see u.
